Put down the boom gates and stand clear of the platform because there is an actual pub on platform 2 at Lilydale station in Melbourne’s East.
The pub called VRI Lilydale reopened last year, but it seems like most Melburnians (including me) had never heard of it until a TikTok about it went viral over the weekend.

In the video you can hear @ragnarthedon literally shitting his dacks over how cool it is to have a pub inside a train station.
“Fuck me if this isn’t the most amazing thing ever. Lilydale station platform 2 or 1, there is a fucking pub. A fucking pub on platform,” the TikToker said in the video.
I don’t know if this is normal in other states, but a platform pub is simply not a thing in Melbourne. Quite frankly, I get excited when they have toilets on the platform that aren’t locked, let alone a fucking pub.
Imagine missing your train, but knowing you can get a cheeky beer before the next one arrives. GENIUS. This is a massive game changer, AND I strongly encourage all train stations across Melb to do this.
ALSO in winter this is a great way to keep warm and entertained, instead of freezing your ass off waiting for the train. The pub’s even got a fire pit.
It’s pretty cool, but the only downside is you have to travel to Lilydale, which is a good hour from the city if you take the train. So I guess it makes sense why they need a pub down there, because otherwise you’d be waiting a long time for that first sip of frothy goodness if you were Melb-bound.
The Lilydale VRI bar and museum originally opened in 1914 and now sits as a heritage listing. It’s open every Friday from 3-8pm. So unfortunately it’s not a daily thing, but it DEFS should be.
Petition to put pubs on every train station platform, please and thank you.
