Holiday Tip: Don’t Leave Bags Of Money On Islands

Produced in association with VISA.

Lauren Bath is one of those rare people who have managed to turn their personal social media skills into a full time gig; mostly due, in no small part, to her immense talent and passion. Thanks to her amazing Instagram she can now claim the title ‘Professional Instagrammer/Travel Photographer’ and is currently working in destination marketing i.e. getting paid to travel i.e. The Dream.

When chatting about Visa’s Holiday Replay competition, wherein you could win $20k to re-do your worst ever holiday experience, we had the pleasure of speaking to Lauren about that time in Indonesia that her stash was compromised. Ouch.

What happened on the holiday you wish you could replay?
I was on a rare overseas holiday that wasn’t related to work and I had split my cash into three piles to be stashed in different bags. I always used to travel with cash in Indonesia as it’s so easy to change. I went on a brief sojourn to Lombok and left one of my small bags on the island, unfortunately with 1/3 of my spending money squired away. I’m a pretty good budgeter when I travel and the money I lost was my cocktail and massage money. I still had a great trip but I had to watch every penny until I went home.

If you were able to do it all again, what would you change?

If I could do it all again I would have left the cash at home and travelled with Visa. I would have had a better time with the extra money.

Any other tales that come in second place for worst travel experience?

Funnily enough it was Bali again and it’s probably something a lot of people have experienced – Bali BELLY!

From all you’ve learned on your many overseas adventures, what are your top tips for trotting the globe?

There are things that I’ve learned that I don’t apply, such as packing lightly; I always always take more than what I need and regret it! A great tip is to be prepared for anything, be really careful with your cash, know a little bit about your destination and travel with important documents and expensive items as carry on. Many budget airlines can lose your bag.

Have you ever lost your cash travelling? We know that feel bro. It hurts. It probably still hurts, but If you head here and tell us your story, you could win a chunk of the $75k up for grabs to do your holiday all over again, thanks to Visa.
