Aussie Travelers Warned of Increased Indonesian Terror Threat

Following warnings from the United States about possible threats against US-owned banks and hotels in Surabaya, East Java, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has updated its travel advice for Australians in Indonesia.
Per an ABC News report, the DFAT has updated the advisory on its Smart Traveller website, telling Australians to “exercise a high degree of caution in Indonesia, including Bali, at this time due to the high threat of terrorist attack.”
Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says that the Australian government has worked “very closely” with security, intelligence and law enforcement agencies in Indonesia, and has urged travellers to stay informed about current events in the country.
The website advises Australians to “reconsider” travel to the Central Sulawesi, Maluki, Papua and West Papua provinces. The update also says that customs officials in Indonesia “may deny entry” to visitors who have a criminal record.
On October 12, 2002, a bomber in a Kuta Beach nightclub killed 202 people, including 88 Australians and 38 Indonesians.
