Sony Have Announced A Gaming Device That’s Essentially A Glorified Coaster

Sony have been in the portable gaming market for a little while now, so news of a new device might not sound all that surprising, but the product itself is – how do you say – a little fucking weird.

Far from a traditional platform, Project Field is a kind of glorified card table that connects to a smartphone or tablet via bluetooth. Like Amiibo or Skylanders, it interacts with special items that are placed upon it.
Details are sparse at this stage, but it looks like card games will become the bulk of the experience, as per this delightful little picture.

It’s not exactly groundbreaking, but don’t tell developer Kazuyuki Sakamoto that. “We believe this is a brand new platform that will allow for a playing style that has not existed up until now,” he said, adding that it would bring “a digital spice to the experience of touching an analog thing”.

He also mentioned that he’s open to the idea of Project Field connecting with TV’s or consoles in the future, but there was no mention of a price or release date.
Game developers Level-5 and Bandai Namco are on board with Sony but are yet to confirm any games for the device apart from the 3DS title, Yokai-Watch
