A one of a kind, retro Nintendo PlayStation hybrid has sold at auction for a whopping $360,000USD, making history as the most expensive piece of video game memorabilia ever sold.

The Nintendo x Sony hybrid, which looks like a Super NES but features the PlayStation logo and branding, made headlines back in December of 2019 when the very last prototype was listed for auction by Heritage Auctions.

Within the first 24 hours of being listed, the price of the hybrid prototype rose to a whopping $200,000USD, which is roughly $301,309 dollarydoos for all of you playing at home in Australia.

But it didn’t stop there, by the time the device sold, it had a spicy $360,000USD price tag. Yes $542,357AUD. HALF A MILLION DOLLARS.

The device was originally purchased by a former employee named Terry Diebold, who purchased it at a bankruptcy auction for just $100USD

So what exactly are you getting for a cozy half a million dollars?

The vintage console was the lovechild of a short-lived partnership between Sony and Nintendo (aka two of the biggest companies in the gaming world). According to Kotaku, the Nintendo Play Station was developed back in 1991 and was the first ever attempt at developing the PlayStation we all know and love today.

The device is basically just a SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System) with a built in CD-ROM, like a PlayStation. Honestly, it’s a pretty nifty invention, and with only 200 ever made it’s a great part of gaming history but come on, half a million dollars?

For half a million dollars you can buy a house. OR, you can buy a fucking game console.
