Vanishing Elephant Spring 2011 – Them Old Cotton Fields

Vanishing Elephant (interview here) are Felix Chan, Huw Bennett and Arran Russell, three Sydney dudes who favour the classicism of a good pair of pants over flash in the pan trends or the futile pursuit of blacker blacks and drape-ier drapes.

The trio’s latest collection, Them Old Cotton Fields, takes visual inspiration from the folk rock icons of the 60s and 70s (Creedence Clearwater, Neil Young, The Band, and Crosby, Stills and Nash), classic American workwear and ethnic-inspired prints that POP. Not exactly sure what those ethnicities are but the prints are vibrant, almost garishly so, and a wonderful counterpoint to the label’s plainer mainstays: desert boots, chinos, suiting and knits. The smarter way to push boundaries without isolating your core audience.
