Spray On Clothing Now A Reality

We could joke forever about the movement restricting denim sported by the youth of today because yeah, some people look like they’ve literally sprayed toddler jeans onto their malnourished limbs and tights as pants is becoming alarmingly commonplace. But the next time you make a throwaway jibe about “spray on jeans” or too-tight whatevers, the recipient’s reply just might be “Thanks for noticing, I sprayed them myself.” Yep, thanks to our good friend Science, spray on clothing is a real thing that exists and it’s coming to an aerosol can near you.

The technology is currently being developed by Spanish designer Dr. Manel Torres who, in conjunction with the Imperial College London and The Royal College of Art, has pioneered a body hugging spray comprised of cotton fibres, polymers and solvents that instantly forms a fabric when it touches human skin.

Says Torres: “When I first began this project I really wanted to make a futuristic, seamless, quick and comfortable material. In my quest to produce this kind of fabric, I ended up returning to the principles of the earliest textiles such as felt, which were also produced by taking fibres and finding a way of binding them together without having to weave or stitch them.”

You can watch two demonstration clips below. The end result is reusable, environmentally friendly and quietly charming in that homespun kinda way. Also, Science completely justifies the act of spraying a woman’s naked chest with what appears to be silly string?
