HBO knows that they tend to pump their shows full of sex, violence and other gratuitous swathes of behaviour that would make most people’s hair turn white. They also know just how profoundly awkward it can be watching boobs on a 64 inch HD TV in the company of your parents. So (at least in America) they’re encouraging you to get on board with HBO Go, their app-based streaming service, so you can enjoy the sinful pleasures of shows such as Game of Thrones, True Blood, True Detective, or Curb Your Enthusiasm in total privacy, like a fourteen year old boy wanting a little “time alone” with Khaleesi and Drogo real fan does.
So they went ahead and produced a series of ads that, god damn it, captures the sheer awkwardness of it a little too well. I’m shifting uncomfortably even as I watch them.
