Frank Gehry To Design Sydney Building

I’m sorry Melbourne but those ungrateful bastards in Sydney will be the first Australians to boast a Frank Gehry building in their city. It hurts doesn’t it? They probably don’t appreciate avant-garde Architecture much less know who Frank Gehry is. It really is unfortunate, Frank could have done some wonderful things with those milk crates you insist on sprawling throughout your alleyways. But alas, Mr Gehry, acclaimed Architect and mastermind behind some of the world’s most iconic buildings (The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, The MARTa Museum in Herford, Germany, The Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles) will apply his amorphous, warped and fantastical designs to a former industrial site in Ultimo.

The University Of Technology, Sydney made the announcement yesterday and as The SMH reports an official agreement was struck on Wednesday following three months of courting. It’s unbelievable news for Sydney but for Gehry acolytes dwelling elsewhere – don’t hold your breath. UTS vice-chancellor Ross Milbourne whose suspicious surname is phonetically similar to another Australian city said: ”Frank told me this is his chance to create a building in Australia after first visiting 20 years ago. It will probably be his only building in this country.”

Architecture enthusiast or not, Pedestrian highly recommends Sketches Of Franck Gehry a riveting 2005 documentary by Sydney Pollack. Gehry’s creative process is as extraordinary as the buildings he designs.
