This officially rules: CoverGirl has announced their newest face, and in a big f u to gender stereotypes it’s 17-year-old male makeup artist James Charles.
This is the first time in history that a male has been chosen to be the CoverGirl, and given that previous CoverGirls include Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Drew Barrymore, Zendaya and Zooey Deschanel, to say this is a Big Deal is a huge bloody understatement.
The makeup brand said in a statement that all their CoverGirl models are “role models and boundary-breakers, fearlessly expressing themselves, standing up for what they believe, and redefining what it means to be beautiful James Charles is no exception.
James tweeted his thanks for the support shortly after the announcement was made.
it’s only 12 and today has already been so crazy. i am so thankful/excited for everything in store and the support has been amazing. ??

He even got a shout-out from Katy Perry.
“Breaking gender norms just comes instantly as soon as a boy is comfortable and confident enough to put on makeup,” he told BuzzFeed. “I think it’s so important to love who you are and be comfortable in your own skin.”
