Banana-Tossing Port Adelaide Dingus Hit With Fine & A 6 Month Stadium Ban

The Port Adelaide fan who threw a banana at Indigenous Adelaide Crows player Eddie Betts during a match has been hit with a $543 fine and a 6 month ban from entering Adelaide Oval.

The woman was captured on video throwing a banana at Betts after he had scored a goal, and has been subject to a lot of criticism from people who couldn’t help but figure there were racist undertones to the gesture.

A statement from released from Port Adelaide said that the woman had agreed to undertake cultural awareness training:

“She quite clearly recognises that she’s made a terrible mistake and we’ll work with her on that.

“We have got a very proud reputation, we’ve got industry leading Indigenous programs and cultural awareness programs so we will actually get her involved in those so that she can actually understand what she’s done.

“We do quite extensive cultural awareness training with all our staff, so we’ll involve her in that program, and that does include our Indigenous players.”

Betts has said it’s upsetting that racism like this still exists and that he’s hopeful other people will learn from this and maybe stop being a pack of dickheads.

All in all it seems like a pretty underwhelming punishment. Here’s a hot tip: maybe don’t just throw shit at people ever.
