Good lord. There’s good hustle on a sporting field, and then there’s this.

But after an uneventful but not by any means terrible first inning of play, the professional nature of sports and list management came into play. The A’s decided to trade Ferrell, receiving a CATBNL (Comedic Actor to be Named Later) from the Seattle Mariners in exchange.

Luckily for Ferrell, he only had to travel as far as the opposing dugout, as the Mariners were the A’s opponent in the game. A quick change of uniform and Ferrell took the field for Seattle at 2B.

Unfortunately for Will, the cogs of professional baseball kept ticking over, and thus following a solid effort in the field for Seattle, the Mariners unceremoniously cut him, sending him to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in a trade.

The fresh-faced Ferrell arrived just prior to the start of the Angels game, brimming with hope that a new club and a new job at centre field would be enough to revitalise his career.

The Cubs centre field stocks were full, however. So Ferrell was offered a position at first base, which he gleefully accepted. But keeping an eye towards the future, and realising the wealth of baseball knowledge that Ferrell brought with him to the franchise, the Cubs also took the unique step of trialling Ferrell in a coaching position with the club as well, letting him run proceedings from third base for a few innings. Though his methods were unconventional, they definitely seemed effective.

Despite adequate efforts in left-field, it appears that Ferrell and Diamondbacks brass suffered a severe falling out over the course of the game, leaving management no choice but to cut him loose from the squad to avoid further disruption to the rest of the players.

Turning a crisis into an opportunity, the Cincinnati Reds swooped on the fallen star, picking him up off the waivers from Arizona, cutting fellow comedian-cum-ball player Norm Macdonald to make room on the playing list.

Perhaps wearied by the constant movement and uncertainty, Ferrell – now a third baseman – arrived at the Reds looking a little fatigued.

The Reds noticed the lack of passion, and swiftly placed him back on the waivers from whence he came.

Upon landing at the game, the team put their new recruit straight to work, sending him directly into bat in the in-progress game.

Thinking that a late game trade would provide no consequences, the White Sox were stunned when the Giants threw Ferrell in at catcher for the dying innings of the game, which helped lift the Giants to a 7-4 victory.

But an argument with Giants manager Bruce Bochy after Bochy pulled Ferrell from the game with the result already in the bag lead to Ferrell and the Giants organisation parting ways.

A stellar performance ensued, pitching a third of an inning and returning a clean sheet. And though at first that appeared to be the final curtain call on a stellar career…

…the lure of the great game proved too great, and Ferrell was coaxed out of a minutes-long retirement to, fittingly, have one final dig for the pride of Ron Burgandy’s home town, the San Diego Padres.

Despite locking down right field in a manner which wound the clock way back to his rookie days at Oakland, Ferrell’s efforts alone were not enough to put one last full stop on perhaps the greatest journeyman career the game has ever seen. The Padres went down to the Dodgers 1-0 in a tight, hard fought contest.
