WATCH: David Pocock Stays Woke, Champions Gay Footballers On ‘The Project’

It seems Australian rugby players find their chiseled mugs in the papers for dubious reasons all too often, so when players as objectively good as David Pocock roll around, it’s cause to pay attention.

Of course, the bloke’s sporting prowess is without question, and he’s gearing up to face England with the Wallabies in the upcoming test series. Yet, as Waleed Aly mentioned to him on tonight’s episode of The Project, he mightn’t be wearing the green and gold as captain.

Previously, former Wallaby Greg Martin said Pocock’s choice to stand up to another player’s homophobic  remarks on-field “will mean that he will never captain the Wallabies again.”

Aly asked if that decision had indeed been made for him, due to the quote-unquote “controversial” nature of his decision to call out homophobia on the field.

Is that question an absolute softball lobbed from one switched-on bloke to another? Absolutely. Does it make Pocock’s response any less meaningful? Nup.

Pocock downplayed the influence of commentators like Martin on the issue, before saying “traditionally we’ve been horrendous at being inclusive.

Statistically, there are no gay rugby players or rugby league players who are out in Australia, and there have to be some out there”.

Then he went and referenced his intention to take some time away from the game to study, because of course he would. Be still our beating hearts.
