TAB Back-pedals After Tasteless Pre-Asian Cup Final Tweet

Look, managing a social media account can be pretty sticky at times: while a regular slip-of-the-tongue at work may often go undetected—showing your true colours by bitching to your colleagues over the water cooler, mispronouncing the word “count” by accidentally omitting the first vowel, a slip-up that inevitably leads to a chuckle or two, not a nightmare—when you have to use the proverbial, uncensored megaphone of life to do your job, things can go wrong, and nothing ever flies under the radar.

But there’s social media slip-ups, and then there’s just social media dick moves. Let’s take Aussie punting house TAB’s twitter account, for example.

To be clear, TAB’s twitter game is usually #OnPoint.

Like this.

Or this.

However, TAB has tarnished a delightful feed populated by solid memes, after posting this late last night – the tweet has since been removed (as far as we can tell). TFW you’ve taken a preemptive screenshot, tho.

The caption read: “Spot the difference… #ACFinal #GoSocceroos”

Zing.

While we can give TAB’s social media managers the benefit of the doubt that this was a poor late-night decision, made on a Friday, no less, this still stinks like hell.

Firstly, making—let’s face it, tasteless—implications about a country through their respective cuisine stalwarts is pretty daft. It doesn’t make any commentary on tonight’s South Korea vs. Australia Asian Cup Final by referencing the teams, the players or the betted outcomes, it’s just a tasteless bully move. In a word, DUMB.

Secondly, if you were sold on making a tackless jab at South Korea, would you really go for making fun of Korean BBQ, FFS? While the charred-to-a-crisp snags on white bread, smothered in tomato sauce of ‘strayan barbecues are delicious in a nostalgic sense, Korean BBQs fucking kill it. They’re delicious, enjoyed by groups, and even if you were a lil ole lady trying it out solo, I reckon it’d still be a pretty ace time.

While America is treated to heart-warming campaigns and stellar ads in the lead up to the Super Bowl, we’re given this kind of BS. Ugh.

Australia will face off with FIFA world ranked #69 South Korea tonight at Stadium Australia in Sydney. May the team who wins enjoy the most delicious BBQ of their choice in celebration.
