Sydney FC And Melbourne Heart Are Having A Blue Over Colours

Sport tends to inspire some fairly unique feelings of territory and ownership over a range of things you’d previously consider to be unremarkable. Loosely defined suburbs become staunchly defended stomping grounds. Regular men become prized possessions. Even something as small as colours become war paint that is held dearer than most philosophies. So what happens when one team decided they want to wear the same colour as you? You don’t just sit there and let them walk all over you with their fancy big city wallets. You take up arms and you burn some shit. Melbourne Heart’s new owners are English Premier League giants Manchester City FC, and their newly installed big brother is very keen on letting the world know exactly which family they belong to. The powerhouse has submitted an application to Football Federation Australia that, if successful, would see the entire club rebranded in City’s image. Moving forward, the club would be renamed Melbourne City, their emblem would alter to reflect its new financial roots, and perhaps most significantly, their playing strip would change from the usual red and white to Manchester City’s colour scheme of sky blue. The only slight problem with this idea, is that Sydney FC – current colour? Sky blue – are none too keen on splitting laundry.

Sydney’s claim more or less revolves around the “we were here first” argument. That coupled with the fact that the sky blue colour is generally synonymous with New South Wales sport as a whole. However Manchester City’s significant financial clout is expected to hold a certain amount of weight, particularly in the relative infancy of the A-League. City has already branded another franchise team in their own image in New York City FC in the USA’s Major League Soccer competition. And now they look to expand back into the colonies.
But really, it’s a ridiculous proposition. Two teams with the same primary colour? Come on. Something like that wouldn’t even come close to happening in the English Premier League, right?
