World number 1 Serena Williams has just won her fifth US Open title and 17th Grand Slam, overcoming second-ranked Victoria Azarenka 7-5, 6-7 (6-8), 6 -1. It was a rematch of last year’s title fight, which Williams also won in three sets.
Williams was a gracious winner, praising Azarenka in the post-match presentation. “Victoria you played unbelievable. What a great match and a great person. It’s an honor to play against you.” Azarenka also had nothing but kind words for the American victor: “It’s a tough loss but being in the final against the best player, who deserves the win, it’s incredible… I gave it everything I had. I fought hard but well deserved. Congratulations Serena.” Aww, you guys!
Novak Djokovic will meet Rafael Nadal in the men’s final tomorrow.
