Popular Trivia App Criticised Over Adam Goodes Ape Question

The downside of social sharing apps like Trivia Crack is that they rely on users to self-moderate and not be dickheads; because you’re reading about Trivia Crack and Adam Goodes together in the one story, clearly that hasn’t happened.
Over the weekend, mother Caroline Turnbull was helping her children answer questions on the app, which relies on user submissions, when they came upon one that linked Goodes with the 2001 film Planet Of The Apes.
The multiple choice question asked who starred in the movie, and listed the Sydney Swans player – who had a spectator ejected from a 2013 game after she hurled the insult “ape” at him – as one of the choices.
Turnbull was particularly upset because earlier that day, she had been speaking to her children about the racist taunting Goodes has faced in recent times, and the #IStandWithAdam campaign to support him.
“It was about 20 minutes after we’d had this long conversation with the kids about racism in Australia,” she later said.
“I just couldn’t believe that someone would submit a question like that. We were infuriated, that with everything that’s going on, people would still think that that’s okay.”
Trivia Crack originated in Argentina in 2013, and topped the charts in the App store when it was translated to English the following year. Many of its questions are submitted and vetted by users, who have the option to report inappropriate content and factual errors.
Turnbull has reported the question, after showing it to friends and family, all of whom had a roughly similar response:
Goodes, who has taken time off from the AFL after being abused, did not attend Saturday’s Swans game against the Adelaide Crows, but there was a groundswell of support for him on the day.
Fans in the stadium and around the country held up #IStandWithAdam banners and displayed his number 37, while his fellow players broke through a banner marked ‘Respect’ as they entered the field.
