NSW Women’s Rugby League Squad Shatter 17-Year Curse, Beat QLD For The Cup

Congratulations, New South Welshmen and New South Welshwomen: a 17-year-long women’s rugby league curse has finally – finally –  been shattered.

For the first time this millennium, the Blues toppled the Queensland women’s squad 8 – 4 in the Women’s Interstate Challenge, and that’s a result y’all should be damn proud of.

Following a scoreless first half –  a tally which didn’t reflect the intensity of the match, at all – NSW’s Simaima Taufa finally put numbers on the board with a 53rd minute try. Maddie Studdon converted to make it six.
Full-back Samantha Bremner was awarded a penalty after facing the wrong end of a high tackle, and the resulting 2 points gave ’em an 8 – 0 lead.

That lead was cut by a 79th minute consolation try from the Maroons’ Ali Brigginshaw, but at that point, the historically unlucky NSW squad already had the win under wraps.

The result was straight-up jubilation from the team, and nobody on God’s green Earth could begrudge ’em:

We guess all that’s needed now is for the Blues to hold the Nellie Doherty Cup for another two decades as recompense. Sound good, Queensland?
