Eddie McGuire Commits Adam Goodes King Kong Gaffe, Backpedals Furiously

Eddie McGuire has been left more red-faced than he usually is after saying Indigenous Sydney Swans footballer Adam Goodes should be used to promote King Kong the musical in Melbourne. The President of the Collingwood Football Club, Fox Footy commentator and Triple M breakfast radio host committed the gaffe just days after he was applauded for personally apologising to Goodes after a 13 year old Collingwood fan called him an “ape” during the final quarter of Sydney’s 47 point victory over Collingwood at the MCG on Friday night.

In a sad twist of irony, the incident occurred during Indigenous round.

McGuire would later describe his zero tolerance approach to racism by saying: “You can’t discriminate about discriminating. We have to decide whether we are going to be a red-neck hick country, or we are going to be a country that is very much involved in tolerance. Somebody saying this at the football is a very, very long trickle down effect.”

Days later he would make a hypocrite of himself.

The gaffe was made earlier today when Hot Breakfast co-host Luke Darcy was discussing the promotional activity surrounding King Kong the musical.

“Get Adam Goodes down for it, you reckon?” McGuire replied.

“No, I wouldn’t have thought so,” Darcy responded.

McGuire then initiated backpedal mode, saying: “You can see them doing that, can’t you? Goodesy. You know, the big, not the ape thing the whole thing, I’m just saying the pumping him up and mucking around and that sort of stuff.”

He again attempted to clarify: “Just to clear up, when we were talking about King Kong there and I was mumbling my way through about Goodesy, I was trying to say ‘Imagine the old days of trying to get people in for publicity’ and I’ve mumbled my way through that so anyone who thought that I was having a go or being a smart alec I take that back.”

Then Darcy was like: “Yeah. Not sure where you were going there.”

Then McGuire was like: “Nah, neither did I halfway there I was that exhausted this morning, so apologies to that. But I was thinking you know in the old days in these situations the publicity and that type of thing. I was off on a tangent somewhere. Just in case people are thinking ‘What the hell’s he on about’, I have no idea either.”

Then Adam Goodes was like…

Expect an official statement from McGuire and Collingwood shortly.
