Eddie McGuire Claims Painkiller Use At The Time Of His Adam Goodes Gaffe

It’s a little known fact that goofs and gaffes involving heavy-duty painkillers and anaesthetics exist on a spectrum. On one end reside the hilari-cute videos of utterly zonked children and animals as they blearily re-emerge into reality:

On the other end? Medical malpractice suits, and implications that said medication is somewhat culpable for random racist musings. At least, that’s what Eddie McGuire seems to have claimed about his 2013 remarks regarding Adam Goodes

Speaking to GQ, McGuire implied his suggestion the Indigenous footballer fly down to Melbourne to promote the King Kong musical was partially spurred by a potent cocktail of meds he was taking at the time.

The Collingwood football club head honcho said “I haven’t really said this before, but I was on massive painkillers and crutches [for] an infection in my knee… I was on heavy-duty painkillers, antibiotics and steroids.”

Of course, McGuire apologised on-air and in person after the incident, but the relationship between the two men has been strained since.

For what it’s worth, McGuire told the magazine “I’d like to think that we would be [mates], one day, and that I prove worthy to him.”

The past few months haven’t been entirely free of incident for McGuire either, so it may be a lil’ while yet. In the meantime, somebody oughta follow him around after his next surgery and convince him the Pies are in contention.
