Cricket Australia Commissions Review Into Phillip Hughes’ Death

In a devastating freak accident, Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes passed away in hospital two days after being struck by a cricket ball while batting for South Australia in November last year.
Now, Cricket Australia has announced they’ll be commissioning an independent review into the situation surrounding his devastating passing.
It will look at the circumstances leading up to Hughes‘ death, as well as current systems in place to prevent these circumstances again. It will also review Cricket Australia’s helmet and provision standards.
Cricket Australia’s CEO James Sutherland said that the review was not to place blame, but simply to make sure nothing like it ever happens again. He said this in a statement today:

“When this tragedy happened, I said that it was a freak accident, but it was one freak accident too many. Never again do we want to see something like that happen on a cricket field.

We have a deep responsibility and obligation to look into the events of that awful day to understand everything that occurred and then see what could be done to prevent a similar accident happening in the future.

This is not an exercise designed to apportion blame on any individual for what took place. It is about making sure that as a sport we are doing everything in our power to prevent an accident of this nature happening again.”

The review is expected to made available to the public later this year, and will be led by a former chairman of the Victorian Bar Council and president of the Australian Bar Association, David Curtain.
