Bill Lawry To Retire At Seasons End

Forget the Mayan prophecy, cricket fans are dealing with their own game-changing devastation today with news that Bill Lawry will be retiring from the commentary box at the end of the season. It’s been a trying summer for sentimental fans with Tony Greig enduring his own health issues, Richie Benaud continuing to scale back his on-air role, and Ricky Ponting announcing a shock retirement.

With a commentary career spanning 35 years, many fans haven’t experienced a summer without the excitable Victorian losing his shit at the fall of each wicket, every dropped catch, or during any prolonged debate with traditional sparing partner Tony Grieg. If anything, the up coming series against Sri Lanka was shaping as a bit of an anti-climax following the World Number 1 shoot out against South Africa but Bill’s impending retirement will surely see fans tune in with a renewed sense of vigor.

With three Tests to go, expect Lawry enthusiast to savoir every “shot!“, wildly cheer every wicket (“Got him, yes!”), and applaud every time “it’s all happening.“- especially if it’s at the MCG.

Bill at his best:
