Basketball Queen Lauren Jackson Nabs Flag Bearing Duties

Australia’s undisputed basketball queen and captain of Australia’s team The Opals Lauren Jackson has been selected to wave the Australian flag at the Opening Ceremony of the London Olympic Games this Friday evening (London time). The 31-year-old will be competing in her fourth consecutive Games, after taking home the silver medal at the previous three.

Jackson has provided much inspiration off the court as well as on. In addition to being a star player in the major women’s b-ball league in the US, she has been a vocal activist and spokesperson for rape victims and combating violence against women.

She described the opportunity to carry the flag as one of pride. She said, “Tomorrow night, even tonight, is just the proudest moment of my life, no doubt about it.”

“To be named the leader of the team, and to be able to walk in front of Australia at an Olympic Games is something that I never, in my wildest dreams, would have imagined I could achieve.”

Here is a name-appropriate but thematically irrelevant song dedication.
