Australia And The AFL Try To Stamp Out Homophobia

With news that Get Up’s ‘It’s Time’ marriage equality campaign is to be aired in America, Australian television will soon be graced by a new LGBT campaign, this time aimed at targeting harassment based upon sexual orientation.

The campaign, No To Homophobia, also says no to biphobia and transphobia. It focuses on the ability of both targets and witnesses of inappropriate behaviour to take action, empowering Aussies through the provision of relevant legal information which protects everyone from discrimination. A TV advertisement has been launched, depicting harassment through a series of snide remarks and sarcastic asides like “Hey Princess, where’s your tiara today?”, real-life examples too often passed off as jokes.

The campaign has been cosigned by the AFL who were recently forced to address the issue after St Kilda’s Stephen Milne used a homophobic slur (“fucking homo”) against Collingwood’s Harry O’Brien.

“A campaign of this nature promoting respect for each other, healthy relationships and a safe, inclusive environment is imperative if we are to affect positive cultural change,” said AFL Chief Executive Officer Andrew Demetriou.

“Through both our actions and the guidelines that govern our game, we are committed to providing a truly inclusive, safe and welcoming environment that fosters healthy, respectful relationships on and off the field.”
