3AW’s John Burns Under Fire For Allegedly Calling Richmond’s Bachar Houli A ‘Terrorist’

The “prominent media figure” at the centre of the latest round of alleged boneheaded behaviour from sporting spectators has been revealed to be 3AW presenter John Burns.

Burns was today the subject of an investigation by the AFL and the Richmond Football Club, stemming from an incident that occurred in the stands of the Melbourne Cricket Ground during Friday night’s clash between the Tigers and the Melbourne Demons.
Burns was sitting in the grandstand of the room where the Tigers official club function was being held. A member of the Tigers staff allegedly overheard Burns refer to Richmond defender Bachar Houli as a “terrorist.” The staff member reported the incident to senior Tigers officials, including club CEO Brendon Gale, who launched an official investigation into the incident.
Houli, drafted in 2006 by Essendon before moving across to the Tigers, is the first Muslim person to play professional football in the AFL. He spearheads the Bachar Houli Cup each year, which provides Islamic-based schools the opportunity to have talent identified, celebrate Australia’s cultural diversity, and provide a central role model in Houli for young children interested in the sport. He has also long served as a cultural ambassador for the AFL, and has worked extensively with Government backed deradicalisation programs.
Tigers captain Trent Cotchin expressed his disappointment at the incident when fronting media at training earlier this morning.

“The club will be investigating it. There’s no place for it in our game, it’s disappointing to hear and see it in the papers. [Bachar’s] one of those guys that won’t want it to be about him, he’ll want it to be about what’s right and what’s wrong.”

The AFL and all official media outlets referred to the person in question as being a “prominent media figure” for most of the day whilst statements were being prepared, with Burns’ identity revealed this afternoon.

The 3AW presenter stated that he did not recall making the comment in question, and neither did fellow media figure and friend Steve Price, who was sitting with Burns at the time.
A short time ago, Burns issued a statement of apology through 3AW.

“I had the pleasure of attending the Richmond Football Club function on Friday night. During the match, I sat with a friend and we were catching up and talking about the game. It has been suggested to me that during a conversation with my friend, I was overheard saying something which that person found offensive.

I have no recollection of making an offensive remark.

However, I acknowledge that a complaint has been made and the idea that something I’ve said has offended someone is mortifying to me.

If I have said anything that has offended anybody, I unreservedly apologise. In particular, to the people at the match and the Richmond Football Club.”

In response, the Richmond Football Club issued the following statement.

“Richmond Football Club acknowledges the statement released by 3AW’s John Burns this afternoon in relation to an incident that took place at the MCG on Friday night.

The Club fully supports the staff member who brought this issue to its attention and accepts his version of events. We also accept the apology and now consider the matter closed.”

Only two people (or three at the most) know for sure what was said. If true, it’s a shameful piece of lazy stereotyping the likes of which has the power to demonise and demean.

Again, if true, the fact that it came from a person of such extensive media broadcasting experience is inexcusable. Language is their business, and better judgment at all times should absolutely be shown.
