Woolies Accidentally Leaks $1Million Of Gift Card Data To Thousands, Ripe For The Taking

A rogue Groupon deal gone wrong has led to Woolworths mistakenly leak over $1 million worth of gift card voucher codes to thousands of customers, the Sydney Morning Herald has revealed.

Picture this: you pat yourself on the back for cleverly taking advantage of a Groupon deal last week – where the site offered Woolworths gift cards at a 7.5% discount. Getting $100 worth of stuff for $92.50? It’s basically as good as printing your own money.

But because savvy-buyers can’t have nice things, SMH reports that the 7941 customers who purchased the vouchers were then supposed to receive PDF of their gift card as an email attachment. Simple enough.

However, the PDF attachment turned out to be a lot more than customers bargained for – a spreadsheet containing all 7941 customers’ details and working voucher codes were listed, with $1.3 million worth of Woolworths credit just sitting there, ripe for the taking.

A MILLION DOLLARS.

One customer told SMH that his 10 Woolworths gift cards, totalling $1900, were already being used by others without his knowledge – online and in store, after others had seen the list useable gift vouchers in front of them, and done what many would do in that situation: fucking rort it.

Let’s all take a moment of silence for whoever’s getting fired today. You will rebuild.
