WATCH: What Your Parents Think You Do Vs. What You Really Do IRL

LinkedIn’s like the sensible, ambitious, older brother of social media. To become the juggernaut that it is today, one would imagine that its employees have had a lot of ace advice/direction from someone behind the scenes. Today, on the 5th of November, LinkedIn is celebrating all the top quality support and advice everyone’s parents have given them on the tumultuous road to career success. They’re doing this by encouraging everyone to Bring in Your Parents to work so that they can see all the super-cool stuff you get up to you/swoon over you with pride. See how you can get involved here.

Parents can be the worst.

Sometimes they encourage us to do things that, in retrospect, probably weren’t the best move for us.
BUTTTTTTTTT, most of the time they’re 110% correct.
Let’s face it, they’ve been around the block more times than J. Lo (as much as they may deny how old they actually are) and they’re a fountain of knowledge on pretty much everything.
Not to mention that they: cleaned up your poo, fed you, bathed you, sensibly confiscated several bottles of vodka/goon bags when you were 15, held you when you were crying, scolded you for being an all-round turd, encouraged you to reach your potential, yelled at you when you refused to be encouraged to reach your potential, reasoned with your teachers not to suspend you, gave you rewards for your hard work, and generally put up with all your BS.
To parents all around the world – a big, fat, thank you.
And while they totally have our backs (most of the time), they don’t always ‘get’ the ways we choose to make a living.
Chances are they don’t think ‘developing an app’ will get you paid, they don’t like the sound of this start-up thing, and they defs don’t think ‘barista’ is a ‘real’ job; in fact, the top three misunderstand jobs by the parental units are UI Designer (91%), Data Scientist (80%) and Sub Editor (75%).
BUT. They might not understand, but they’ve got solid career advice. Know your worth / never trust a boss with a weak handshake, etc.
Help a brother / sister out by sharing their best advice with #BIYP, so we can share in the knowledge like some big pot-luck career-athon.
And before you ring up mum/dad and tell them how incredible they are, relish in this video of parents having a crack at describing what their children do for a living. Sound familiar?
