While Australia is still stuck in the fkn mud when it comes to enacting marriage equality, the cause has gotten some major shoutouts at tonight’s ARIA awards.
First, Troye Sivan dedicated his Song Of The Year Award to “every LGBTIQ kid who wants to go and make music,” and now Sia has asked a marriage equality activist to accept her Best Female Artist award for ‘This Is Acting’.
Angie Greene, CEO of LGBTIQ sports-focused charity Stand Up Events, received a standing ovation for a rousing, sometimes teary speech that was pointed at the hot mess that was the proposed marriage equality plebiscite:
“This award is for every single non-hetero and gender-diverse person who can currently not marry the person that they love in this country.”“The bottom line is, Australia, that no one’s lives and the people they love should be up for debate. You have the opportunity now not to do just a great thing, but the right thing.”
Greene was immediately followed by Kylie Minogue and her ridiculously beautiful boyfriend Joshua Sasse, who reaffirmed their support for marriage equality and were sporting ‘Say I Do, Down Under’ shirts.
