WATCH: James Mathison Wants To Stop The Boats Too, But The Rich People Kind

Former Australian Idol host turned political hopeful James Mathison has appeared on ‘The Project‘ tonight, declaring his own “stop the boats” platform for running against former Prime Minister Tony Abbott.

Mathison is making a pretty ballsy attempt, running for the seat of Warringah in Sydney, which has been comfortably held by Tony Abbott for 22 years and a Liberal Party stronghold since its creation around 90 years ago.
He reckons that Tony Abbott’s outdated ideas on climate change, asylum seekers and marriage equality don’t really reflect the views of the electorate and that he’s the fresh young voice and cute face they need.
The team on ‘The Project‘ gave him a quick test to see if he was qualified for the job, asking him if he knew the price of milk (he did), the Reserve Bank’s official interest rate (he did), his favourite type of lettuce (iceberg) and how he feels about the Spit Bridge.
Steve Price chipped in that if Mathison can get “old blokes” to stop sailing sailing through it during the middle of the day, he’d get his vote. Mathison responded enthusiastically:
“If I can get old blokes off boats then you’ll vote for me? Stop the boats! Stop the boats… going under the spit.”

Fingers crossed the slogan works out as well for him as it did for Tony (well, up to a point). Watch the full clip:
