ICYMI, the world went a little bit bonkers-bananas over this footage of a kangaroo chilling on One Mile Beach over at Port Stephens, NSW yesterday:

OH HI YES THIS IS KANGAROO CAN I GO BEACH NOW?

Since there’s nothing we friggin’ love more than cute animals doing funny shit (uhhhhhh welcome to the internet, amirite?) we wanted to find out it if codename ‘Skippy’ pulled this kind of shit on the reg.

Turns out the crafty little bugger – whose real name is Josie, by the way, and she’s a 10-year-old Western Grey kanga – spends most of her days at the Melaleuca Surfside Backpackers, a six-acre hostel / wildlife area 500m down the road from the beach.

She’s usually safe and secure, until some utter drongo left the gate open last weekend, and this happened:

“lol bye m8s”

When we spoke to Michelle Cox, who runs the hostel and looks after Josie (a rescue kangaroo from a culling operation), we found out that this wasn’t the first time Josie had gone and done a runner.

“She once ended up at Taylor’s Beach,” said Cox, which is a full SEVEN KILOMETRES AWAY. “She had to cross two major roads, three farmlands, and a swamp to get there. We suddenly got this call from the people at the fishery saying she was trying to break in, and they were feeding her bits of their sandwiches.”

She also once crashed a wedding. Like, just rocked on up and hopped around.

Josie, you are our new #SpiritAnimal goals and are perfect, please never change.

Cute kangy came to say hi to me at the beach this morning ?????? such a beautiful creature ??
