The Inside Yarn On Trump’s Comedy Central Roast Is As Beaut As You’d Expect

Ahh, the Comedy Central roast of Donald Trump. Back in the halcyon days of 2011, when he was just a cartoonish TV idiot with his hands far, far away from the levers of power. How innocent we all were. The Huffington Post has run a delightfully insidery article on the behind-the-scenes process behind that roast, and yep: it’s precisely what you’d expect.

We’ve heard in the past that Trump had a big hand in the writer’s room for this particular roast – which is somewhat unusual for the format – including making jokes ‘better’ by dramatically increasing the amount of money mentioned by the joke. For example, he changed a line that read, “I’m sorry, I must go now and make a million dollars somewhere else,” to a “billion” dollars.
Because Trump is not naturally funny, his ‘response’ to the roast was also scripted, though he had a strong hand in how the jokes flowed:, with writers saying he erased punchlines and tweaked things to meet his own sense of humour.
Trump’s edits were all over the place. He crossed out an entire riff on condoms in the first draft, scribbling “No” in the margin. Elsewhere, he seemed to revel at opportunities to be crass. He complained a line suggesting Lisa Lampanelli should “shut the fuck up” didn’t end with an exclamation point. But in a later revision, he wanted to switch the line to “get off the stage.”

Trump even suggested changing a line about him being the “smartest man in the world” to being “perhaps the smartest man in the world.”
Writer Daniel Libit posted an image of Trump’s edits – spelling errors and all – which ought to provide some insight into his deeply, deeply cooked brain. Scientists will dissect this image in the future like the ogddamn Zodiac Killer letter.
Jokes that were off-limits? Anything about his hair, for one. Despite the fact everybody on Earth but Trump thinks his hair looks like the shit you extricate from a clown’s shower drain after 100 years of mummification, he clearly does not see the humour. Gags about him having a small penis also didn’t fly, shockingly.
