Sydney Brothel Fights Tit & Nail Against Childcare Being Built Next Door

Because ” apparently ” today is Opposite Day and no one told us about it, a Sydney brothel is fighting plans for a childcare centre to be built next door.

Six-star sexual establishment Centrefolds, in Artarmon on Sydney’s North Shore, has been operating as a brothel in the area for over a decade.

Artarmon is actually something of a brothel hotspot (there’s a total of six in the suburb) so everything’s been pretty footloose and fancy-free up to this point. The brothel is chill*, the customers are discrete, the money gets exchanged for services, and everyone just plays along nicely.

Well, until now, because there are plans to build a childcare not 5 meters away, and Centrefolds are the opposite of chill.

“We really don’t want a childcare centre next door,” a spokesperson told PEDESTRIAN.TV, while Fairfax has quoted the brothel saying the plans were “inappropriate and hypocritical”.

That’s because within Willoughby council (which Artarmon falls under), a brothel must not be built within sight of a premise frequently visited by children. Makes sense.

BUT – somehow, this doesn’t apply the other way round: there are no regulations to say a childcare centre can’t be built near a brothel. (Also, two brothels can’t be within 100m of each other. The more you know…)

Centrefold is protesting to Willoughby Council against the plans, for obvious reasons.

(Truth time: they wouldn’t actually tell us, but in lieu of *actual* info we’re assuming their objections are along the lines of: ‘not wanting customers to be scared off by the site of kiddies’ / ‘worried about a future where they get screwed over because there’s a childcare centre nearby’ / IT’S NOT FUKKEN FAIR MATE.)

The childcare centre’s entrance has already been moved to a different street (from Curry Lane to Dickson Ave, for all you North Shore residents playing at home).

Fairfax reports that all customers at the childcare centre will legit have to be told that there’s a brothel next door, but since every news item this writer’s seen about childcare from the last decade says there’s SOMETHING of a shortage, tbd if it causes any dramas.

Liskowski Fox Architects, who submitted the plans to the council, didn’t return our requests for comment.
