The Couple Who Said They’d Divorce If SSM Passed Have Officially Chickened Out

In news that will shock precisely zero people, the couple who said that they were so unbelievably distressed by the prospect of same-sex marriage that they would instantly divorce if it passes… are not doing that.

Speaking to the Daily MailNick and Sarah Jensen are backpedalling furiously from their brave defence of marriage from THE GAYS. As per a statement from Nick:

My previous public comments regarding civil divorce never envisaged me separating from my wife, but rather our marriage from the State. The legislation currently makes it untenable for us to do this under the law. The point we were highlighting and that still stands however is the fact that a redefinition of marriage changes the agreement under which we were originally married. We will be making no further comment.

Their original article in Canberra CityNews argued that their view is that marriage is a fundamental order of creation” and that any attempt to change anything about it would be an attack on a “fundamental and foundational building block of Australian society”. Sounds pretty serious! Not serious enough for them to actually do it, though.

Nick did actually address the pesky issue of separation in an article for The Bible Society – in which he also assures the reader that this wasn’t just a stunt for publicity, but an actual deeply held belief.

Obviously the problem is that a judge would not grant us a State divorce because we would have to show our marriage is irreconcilably broken and be separated for a year. This is a minor problem however if a simple ‘annulment’ option was available in any legislation for conscientious objectors such as ourselves.

Ah well. Fun while it lasted. Enjoy your marriage, guys!
