The musical will open at the Sydney Lyric Theatre in January 2020 followed by stints at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Melbourne and Lyric Theatre, QPAC in Brisbane. Australian theatrical producer John Frost will lead the production based on the Academy Award-winning flick so expect to see the whole fairytale gang.

The extravaganza will feature 19 songs, a heap of dancing, and a whole lotta fun.

Shrek The Musical first opened on Broadway in 2008 and has since earned fabulous reviews and a bunch of theatre nominations. And by a bunch I mean eight Tony Award nominations, 12 Drama Desk Award noms, 10 Outer Critics Award Circle noms, 3 Drama League Award noms, and a Grammy Award nom for Best Musical Show Album. As The New York Times put it, it’s “True Happiness.”

“I saw Shrek The Musical on Broadway when it opened in 2008 and fell in love with it,” Frost said in a presser.

“I was bowled over by the way audiences responded to the social issues it covers, themes like friendship, discrimination, acceptance, inclusiveness and ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’. I know Australia is going to fall in love with Shrek The Musical as much as I did.”

Tickets will go on sale July 5 with pre-sales kicking off on July 1.

(Here’s the bit where I usually say “You can catch Shrek on Netflix if you suddenly feel like watching it” but Netflix bloody got rid of it.)
