Senior Indonesian Cabinet Members Urge Joko Widodo To Show Bali Nine Mercy, Report Says

Senior Indonesian cabinet members and prominent figures are allegedly pleading with Indonesian presidnet Joko Widodo over the fate of Bali Nine leaders Andrew Chan and Muyran Sukumaran, currently on death row on “execution island”, Nusakambangan.

Chan and Sukumaran’s experience on death row has been one of continual set-backs, delays and stalemate international diplomacy led by Foreign Affairs minister Julie Bishop. Today, The Sydney Morning Herald claims certain senior cabinet members close to Joko Widodo have urged the President to “reconsider” the upcoming executions by firing squad of Andrew Chan and Muyran Sukumaran.

An unnamed source told Fairfax that such a suggestion was rejected by Joko Widodo, much like Julie Bishop’s offer of a “prisoner swap” for the Bali Nine members. Joko Widodo bluntly rejected the proposition to media by saying, “No way.”

SMH reports that a Jakarta Governor has also proclaimed his lack of support for the Bali Nine duo to be executed.

Executions of the ten death row prisoners on execution island—nine of whom are foreigners—will be delayed until all of their individual appeals have been heard. The final appeal of Andrew Chan and Muyran Sukumaran was to be held on Thursday, but has since been postponed.

Earlier this week, a portrait of Joko Widodo by Muyran Sukumaran, titled “People Can Change” was revealed.
