Bali Nine Duo Could Face Execution Within Days, Lawyer Says

The Bali Nine duo—Andrew Chan and Muyran Sukumaran—may face execution by firing squad as early as Monday or Tuesday next week, according to the lawyer of a Nigerian man facing death row in the same group as Chan and Sukumaran.

According to Fairfax, lawyer Karim Utomo says both Nigerian and Australian embassies received a letter regarding the executions of their respective citizens currently on death row on Nusakambangan “execution” island, with summons for officials and lawyers representing the men facing execution to be present on Saturday for a meeting. Utomo estimates that the conclusion of the meeting will signal the requisite 72 hour notice of the executions.
A verdict on the Supreme court case for Zainal Abidin, an Indonesian drug smuggler also facing death row, is still due. A rejected result will mean “the ten people will be complete,” according to a spokesperson for the Attorney General.
Indonesian President Joko Widodo was quoted this week, saying the executions were “only a matter of time” away. Last week, Joko Widodo was honoured in TIME magazine’s Top 100 Influential People list, and was praised for his “commitment to Indonesia’s tradition of religious diversity.”
Earlier this month, Chan and Sukumaran’s final legal appeal for mercy was rejected.
