Police attended the STEM School in Highlands Ranch shortly before 2pm local time.

Douglas County Undersheriff Holly Nicholson-Kluth told reporters shots were still being fired when officers entered the charter school.

Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock said officers engaged two suspects upon arrival and there was a “struggle” to apprehend them.

The suspects are students of the school. One is an adult, while the other is a minor. Their identities have not been released by police.

Speaking to NBC, eyewitness Rocco DeChalk said a stampede of students ran past his house during the shooting.

DeChalk said he saw a teenage boy with a gunshot wound and was able to alert a police officer.

The boy was taken to hospital by an ambulance.

The STEM school, which has roughly 1,850 students, is just 13 kilometres southeast of Columbine High School, the site of a deadly 1999 school shooting.

More to come.
