Revenge Porn Is Now A Crime In NSW

Publicly posting or sharing “intimate” images of someone else without their permission is now a crime in the state of New South Wales.

The new revenge porn laws carry potential jail time for the offender, as well as a fine of as much as $11,000.

The NSW State Government announced early on Friday morning that the new laws would make it a criminal offence to intentionally record or distribute an intimate image of a person without their knowledge, consent, or permission.

The laws also contain protection provisions for people in abusive domestic relationships, making it an offence to even threaten to distribute the images or videos.

NSW Attorney General Mark Speakman issued a short statement this morning confirming the new laws, stating that they “shift the power away from vengeful ex-partners and manipulative predators and help victims regain privacy and dignity.

The laws even go so far as to stipulate as much as two extra years in jail and a further $5,500 for offenders who refuse or fail to take down any offending material.

Offenders found guilty of distributing or recording intimate images of a person without their consent now face up to three years in jail.
