Queensland Prisoners Destroying TV’s To Light Up

Queensland prisoners have destroyed hundreds of television sets installed in cells after using the Walter White-certified method of using sparks from stripped electrical cables from within the appliances to light cigarettes.

The Courier Mail reports today that the Lotus Glen Correctional Centre has had to replace 425 televisions and repair another 131 in the past year alone. Inmates, who rent the televisions at a cost of $2 per week, have been threatened with TV bans of up to six months if they are found to be damaging equipment. The jail’s Commissioner, Marlene Morison said a $30 bond (equivalent to about three weeks in prison-job wages) would be trialled in the hope of curbing damage.
