Sydney Pub King Justin Hemmes Has Reportedly Acquired An Inner-West Icon

Justin Hemmes’ ever-expanding portfolio of venues in Sydney has now officially grown to include an icon of Sydney’s inner-west, with the Merivale group taking ownership of Marrickville’s hugely beloved Vic on the Park hotel.

Merivale, which owns upwards of 65 venues, is said to have signed the deal to buy The Vic last night. Reports regarding price tags are scarce, but it’s believed the sizeable building fetched a price tag in excess of $20million.

The Vic is now the second inner-western pub that Merivale, of which Hemmes is the CEO, has taken ownership of in recent times, following on from the group’s purchase of the Queen Victoria Hotel on Enmore Road. Merivale rebranded the venue as the Queens Hotel in December of 2016.

The Vic is a fixture of the Marrickville community, and runs regular live music, hosts street art exhibitions, and has an excellent dog-friendly policy.

Merivale reportedly takes ownership of The Vic from November 13th. Crucially, the group has stated it has no plans for any refurbishment of the venue. The pub will remain open throughout the ownership handover, and the group will put a slightly larger focus on the pub’s food offerings.

How, if at all, this affects the pub’s day-to-day operations remains to be seen.
