One In Three Aussies Compare Dad To Family Guy’s Peter Griffin

It’s strange but undeniable: Australians love an anti-hero. Take yesterday for example. The news that Ned Kelly’s remains had been positively identified through the miracle of DNA technology was one of the day’s leading headlines and Ned – an established homicidal outlaw – is one of the most romanticised figures in Australian folklore. Similarly, Australians have an unwavering absolution of questionable people like Chopper Reid, Pauline Hanson and Paul from Neighbours. Why are we so enamoured with the non-heroes?

Seems overlooking flaws and rejecting traditional values of the archetypal are our forte, an Aussie trait it you will, and apparently this thought process extends to the home. In a recent poll one in three Aussies said the television character most similar to their dad is Family Guy patriarch Peter Griffin.

Peter Griffin isn’t renown for his conventional parenting skills, his intellect or his sportiness. In fact, he is stupid, annoying for his kids, a substance abuser, racist, and cuddly (read: overweight). What does this say about how we perceive our fathers???… Actually, this is all just a vague excuse to put up lol clips of Peter. Happy Father’s Day!
