Melbourne Had Its Hottest September Night In Two Decades, Just In Time For The Strike

In support of the Global Climate Strike – a week of action to demand climate justice, from September 20-27 – Pedestrian Group is doubling down on content that educates and empowers you to do your bit for our planet. The climate crisis won’t wait, so neither will we.

If ever it were appropriate to have yet another historic weather event, the night before an enormous, nation-wide climate strikes seems as apt a time as any. Melbourne is still enduring that awkward weather period between July and November where it can’t quite figure out what’s going, but last night it eschewed its usual chilly evenings for a night of warmth so unseasonable it hasn’t been seen in nearly two decades.

The overnight temperature in Victorian capital didn’t dip below 20 degrees all night, bottoming out at 20.3 degrees at around 5am this morning.

A night that warm in September hasn’t been seen since 2001, when a night of 20.7 was recorded.

The temperature in Melbourne has already spiked back up, with readings above 21 degrees recorded at 8:30am, en route to a forecast high of 26.

Predicted showers and a cool change that were initially forecast to arrive later this evening are now expected to hit the Victorian capital tomorrow instead, with another warm night on the cards for Melburnians.

Strong wind gusts associated with the unusually warm weather have forced several flights to be diverted, including a Qantas A380 superjumbo carrying passengers on a planned flight from Los Angeles, which had to be diverted to Avalon instead of Tullamarine. Getting off a 15-hour flight and then having to cop a 90-minute SkyBus ride back up the Princes Freeway? Yeah that’s…. that’s just no good, at all.

If a night in SEPTEMBER that doesn’t dip below 20 degrees sounds like a sign that things are fairly cooked, you’re probably not bloody wrong.

Fortunately enough, you can make yourself heard by joining the massive Climate Strikes going on around the country today. The details and locations of which are as follows:

  • Adelaide – Victoria Square, 12pm
  • Brisbane – Queens Garden, 12:30pm

  • Hobart – Parliament Lawns, 12pm
  • Melbourne – Treasury Gardens, 2pm
  • Perth – Forrest Place, 11am
  • Sydney – The Doman, 12pm

We’ll be there. You should come too.
