Mates Of Perth Schoolie Arrested On Drug Charges In Bali Say He Was Set Up

Friends of Perth teenager Jamie Murphy, 18, who has been arrested in Bali on suspicion of possessing drugs, maintain that he has been ‘set up’, and have filled social media with supposed video evidence that security guards slipped a small bag of white powder into his pocket before searching him.

Footage of the arrest shows the security guard pulling the bag of white substance out of Murphy’s bag, before Murphy protests. “Are you kidding me? It was not like that,” he can be heard saying. “Come on. This is a f—ing show. I don’t do this shit, I only drink.”
A widely shared post by a Perth friend shows what they believe is clear evidence Murphy was set up, along with a shot at the media for not reporting that angle in the first place.
Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says that Murphy’s plight should be a warning to other prospective schoolies – especially those visiting other jurisdictions to party.

This is an opportunity for me to say, again, if you are travelling overseas you have to remember that, once you leave Australia, you leave the Australian legal system, you leave the support system here and you are subject to the laws of another country

And in the case of Indonesia, the laws can be very harsh for offences or activities in Australia that might seem minor. So it is a warning to all those who are going overseas on schoolies week, and to their parents and friends, that we are subject to the laws of another country when we visit those countries.

Bishop, when questioned about the apparent aggressive behaviour of the police and security, said she “witnessed this kind of behaviour before from the Indonesian police” in other circumstances, but took pains to remind everyone that “we’re subject to their laws, to their system and the way they do things.”

We’ll keep you posted.
