Man Arrested For Allegedly Threatening Sydney NYE Terror Attack Online

A 40-year-old man has been arrested by NSW Police after he allegedly made threats on a blog to commit a terrorist attack at Sydney‘s New Years Eve celebrations.

The man was arrested based on a tip-off from the public. Officers from the NSW Police Force Terrorism Investigation Squad arrested him at Sydney Airport, where he was arriving on a plane from London.
Police searched a home at Chippendale and a storage facility in Sydney’s inner west in relation to the matter.
Deputy Police Commissioner Catherine Burn said that initial investigation suggested it was an isolated incident and the man was allegedly acting alone.

“We are confident that there are no current or specific threats to New Year’s Eve, and while we ask people to remain vigilant, people should enjoy the celebrations,” she said.
Sydney has implemented a number of counter-terrorist measures for the New Year’s celebrations, including a an extensive traffic buffer zone at both the harbour foreshore and in Manly, which is another popular spot to view the famous fireworks.
