Malcolm Turnbull Will Be ‘Straya’s 1st Sitting PM To Attend Mardi Gras

You’d think an event as culturally significant (hell, even just an event as big) as Mardi Gras would have drawn a sitting Prime Minister earlier in its 38-year tenure, but nooope. Malcolm Turnbull is set to become the first, and he’s scheduled to attend the festival tonight.

The Sydney Morning Herald notes his presence at Mardi Gras isn’t unusual, ’cause it takes place smack-bang in his electorate of Wentworth, but this’ll be the first time he’s rocked up as Australia’s head honcho.

On the other side of the gaping maw that is federal politics, Bill Shorten is also locked in to become the first leader of a “major” party to actually participate in the thing.

It’s yet to be seen if their involvement will further stoke the arguments for just bloody legalising same-sex marriage, but seeing two of Australia’s preeminent figures openly supporting Mardi Gras is pretty grand.
