Kevin Rudd Puts Election Campaign On Hold For Syria Briefings

Kevin Rudd has decided to give the politics game a momentary rest (praise the #auspol folks, Rudd’s gotta zip) in the name of the tragic situation that has unfolded in Syria this week, with the death toll from suspected chemical warfare in eastern Damascus climbing in to the thousands. The devastating attack has prompted worldwide response, with Barack Obama labelling it a “grave concern”, Britain claiming it was a state-influenced gas attack and Russia encouraging UN intervention.

Rudd was scheduled to fly from Sydney to his home town of Brisbane today, where his Griffith seat is allegedly in peril, but has delayed plans in order to receive national security briefings about the current developments in Syria. “As Prime Minister of the country I have a responsibility to draw the attention of the Australian people to major events of an international nature which affect our national interest. I’ve formed the judgment that this represents one such event” Kevin Rudd said, according to The Age.
It is still unclear what Australia’s response to the crisis will involve, Rudd has confirmed that the facts need to be established and the global community needs to set an agenda before he could illicit a “calm, sober response.”

More on the Syrian situation as it unfolds; meanwhile, enjoy the brief hiatus of Ruddisms assaulting our dispositions, it won’t last long. Unfortunately, opposition leader Tony Abbott will still be campaigning despite the news, which means he’s likely to contribute enough #asupol slip ups, gaffes and photo ops with babies for the two leaders combined, brace yourselves.
