JFC: George Pell Tells Commission Abuse Rumours Weren’t “Of Much Interest”

Much of the spotlight on Cardinal George Pell’s giving evidence to the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses into Child Sex Abuse is not, obviously, whether or not Pell sexually assaulted kids (which the Daily Tele‘s Miranda Devine felt necessary to remind everyone over the weekend), but just how much Australia‘s highest-profile Catholic knew about the horrific abuse that went on in the ’70s.

Yesterday, Pell – who’s giving his testimony via video link from Rome, where a number of survivors and their supporters are present after a successful crowdfunding campaign to have them flown over – deflected from a bunch of curly questions with a simple “I do not recall”, reminding the commission multiple times that his memory isn’t perfect.
Day two, however, and Cardinal Pell is singing a different tune; when asked specifically if he was privy to the public knowledge that Ballarat‘s notorious paedophile priest Gerald Ridsdale – currently serving a prison sentence for multiple child sex offences, most on young boys – Pell said the rumours of his behaviour simply were not “of much interest to me.”
Here’s the audio of that moment:

JFC ARE YOU KIDDING.

Last night, abuse survivor Paul Levey spoke to ‘The Project about how hard it is watching Pell testify, especially considering he seems to have forgotten many of the incidents that have caused victims so much pain.

The inquiry continues, and the Cardinal’s expected to continue giving evidence for at least another two more days.
