Ingham’s Issues Recall For Gluten-Free Chicken Schnitzels With Gluten In Them

I’m not going to say that the very last thing you want to find in your gluten-free chicken schnitzels is gluten. There are definitely worse things to find — like, say, strychnine or unexploded military ordinance. That would be much worse. Finding gluten is definitely not ideal though, for the gluten-intolerant and otherwise gluten-avoidant. When you purchase an Ingham’s Gluten-Free Chicken Breast Schnitzel, you believe yourself to be entering a compact with the company, one where you give them money and they give you chicken breast schnitzel that is completely devoid of gluten. But this is not always the case, with the company issuing a recall on the product because they may contain the one thing they specifically purport not to have in them: gluten.

The recall is specifically for 440-gram packets of Ingham’s Gluten Free Chicken Breast Schnitzel with a best before date reading 08/04/2019. According to Ingham’s, the product has been available for sale at Woolworths stores in Victoria from 29/03/2019.

The problem is not so much that the schnitzels inadvertently had gluten added to them in the manufacturing process, but that a number of packets of the company’s Southern Style Tenders were mislabelled as gluten-free chicken breast schnitzels. I would contend that a true enthusiast of breaded chicken products would be able to tell the difference by sight, but you’d probably be inclined to trust the labels on this one.

If you happen to have bought these and you can’t or don’t eat gluten: do not eat them! You can return them to the shop from whence they came for a cash refund, and you can call Ingham’s on 1800 785 940 if you have further queries.
