In Perfect Casting News, Aubrey Plaza Is Now The Voice Of Grumpy Cat

Occasionally – only occasionally – the film and TV industry makes a decision that’s so ridiculously right that all you can do is sit there and just nod a bit and go “Right on, soul brothers/sisters. Right on.” Direct from those files comes this ingenious little piece of casting, wherein not only is inexplicably monetized internet sensation Grumpy Cat getting her own made-for-TV Christmas special, but her voice will be provided by the beautiful, hilarious, human embodiment of apathy herself, Aubrey Plaza.
The special, Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever – which was written by former-SpongeBob Squarepants staffer Tim Hill along with Jeff Morris – centres around a cat in a pet store (the afore mentioned Grumpy Cat voiced by the also afore mentioned Aubrey Plaza) who is continually overlooked, and the 12-year old girl (named Chrystal due to reasons) who inexplicably has the ability to communicate with her.
The whole thing – which is live-action, by the way – is currently being filmed, and seems set to feature a swathe of cameos from other Internet-famous people, animals, memes, anything that was mildly notable for the barest amount of time; again proving once and for all that pop culture shall eat itself.
For her part, Plaza has had something of a particularly busy year. The seventh and final season of Parks & Recreation began production just over a month ago. And in the meantime she has worked on five episodes of the TV series Welcome to Sweden (starring Parks’ star Amy Poehler‘s brother Greg Poehler) in addition to the release of a handful of movies, including Life After Beth – a romantic zombie comedy which screened at this year’s Melbourne International Film Festival and is FUCKING EXCELLENT.
You can expect to see exactly what Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever looks like after November 29th, when it airs on the Lifetime channel in the US.
Until then, did you know Grumpy Cat’s name is actually Tardar Sauce? Is this something that’s public knowledge? Or have I become so cynical that that part of my brain that notices these things about fads has just completely shut down?
I think I might be in a bit of trouble here, guys.
