Historical Sex Offence Charge Against George Pell Dropped After Accuser Dies

Prosecutors have withdrawn one of the multiple historical sex offence charges against Cardinal George Pell because the accused has died, the AAP is reporting.

Crown Prosecutor Mark Gibson SC told Melbourne Magistrates Court on Friday that one charge was being withdrawn. The court had previously heard one of the complainants had died.

Pell is due to face a four-week hearing from next Monday to determine if he will stand trial on historical sex offence charges involving multiple complainants.

The 76-year-old has taken leave from his position as Vatican treasurer to fight the charges.
